With the fast development of our country's motorcycle industry, it is almost impossible to complete the sculpt design of the covering panels of a motorcycle with the traditional forward design method due to its complex surface configuration, so the reverse design method has been used in the design of a motorcycle. This kind of reverse engineering technology based on the prototype or the material object of product can enhance the precision of design, and reduce the product development period enormously, thus is used widely in product designing and manufacturing. Therefore, it is very significant and valuable to study the key techniques of reverse engineering applied in the design of the covering panels of a motorcycle.The object of this paper is to bring the reverse engineering theory in practice in the development of motorcycle products under the background of the motorcycle manufacture industry. Some key techniques such as the surface numeralization of a prototype object, the preprocess of point cloud datum , the curved surface reconstruction and so on were extensively studied. And based on the software platform environments of reverse software Surfacer 10.6 and forward three-dimensional software UG NX2.0, The three-dimensional models of all the components and the assemble of a motorcycle body were developed.This paper consists of the following six chapters:In the first chapter, the concept and application area of the inverse engineering are introduced, the special emphasis was placed on the product fast development. The present state and the research trend of the inverse engineering were analyzed, and then the technology route of the development of a motorcycle based on the inverse engineering was developed.In the second chapter, the method of which surface numeralization of a prototype object is realized was studied. The planning scheme of the data acquisition and the reading and stratification of the point cloud data in the inverse engineering were particularly introduced, and then the point cloud datum of a motorcycle body were collected.In the third chapter, multi-view aligning, triggering gauge head and data smoothing, data compaction,data division and so on in the preprocess of point cloud data were studied, and the original point-cloud datum of a motorcycle windshield were processed by means of the multi-view aligning.In the fourth chapter, the correlative techniques of the curved surface reconstruction including the mathematic models and the smoothing methods of NURBS curves and NURBS surfaces, and two methods of the curved surface reconstruction used in the nverse engineering were studied, after all, the error model applied in the reverse engineering was developed.In the fifth chapter, the technology route of the motorcycle development based on reverse engineering was analysed, the data acquisition scheme and curved face mold technology based on the assembly were developed and then the three-dimensional model of a motorcycle body was presented.In the sixth, the conclusions were reached and the prospects were put forward.
