The plant landscape plays more and more important role in the urban landscape. At present, however, most of the researches on plant landscape only lay partichular stress on the qualiative or theoretical aepects. This paper tries to study further on the basis of field investigation and analysis on the planting design in the West Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou, to do some researchs on the general rules and quantitative relations of planting design. The 34 samples picked from the West Lake Senic Area were divided into six classes according to basic spatial elements and surroundings. Each sample was classified and analyzed. And each class of samples was sum up too.In the planting design as an independent spot in the space, the key to design is. enough distant to view the landscape, over 5 species number of trees and shrubs and a high tree, which has enough crown to cover the most of land. And the planting landscape in a line space , formal or informal way lead to different styles. In this class, having equally distant between each one or using similar trees in the same famliy help to form the rule of landscape. The theme of plants or some trees make the landscape to a complete unit. Finally the conclusions were made as follows by analyzing all kinds of data. 1 .Few species suit open space. However,a small area need abundance species. 2.The samples of spot and line in the plant landscaping have different standards on how to divide each layer, especially in the middle layer. The critical height of middle layer of spot plant landscape should be over 6 meter. But the height of middle layer of the line landscape should be more than 12 meter.3.The species important value is calculated and sequenced. It was found that there had a difference between the waterfront plant landscapes and the land ones. The plants in the families of Taxodiaceae, Pinaceae, Aceraceae, Salicaceae, Roseceae are more often applied in the waterfront plant landscapes. In contrast with the watefont ones, the plants in the families of Lauraceae, Ulmaceae, Taxodiaceae, Pinaceae, Oleaceae are more common on the land. It can be supposed that shape and color of trees are the key to waterfront planting design, but evergreen trees are the key to land plant landscape.
