Car body is one of the key assemblies in a car. The body performance is very important part of the general performance of the car. The performance of car body is determined by the static and dynamic characteristics of its structure. The analysis of the stiffness characteristics of car body is the guidance for optimization of car structure and response analysis. Using FEM, and with the car YD01 as an example, this paper does the following reseach work on static characteristics and structure optimization: Using 3 or 4 node shell elements, a fine FEM model of the body shell is established. This paper describes how to deal with the detail structure , selection of element type and simulation of welded spots. The paper also discusses how to simulate the load and boundary in torsional and bending loading conditions. It can be a reference to stiffness analysis of car body. For the FEM model, calculating the static characteristics this paper studies the torsional operation and bending operation of body and deformation of main openings in torsional and bending loading conditions, also studies the influences of the thicknesses on main components and body stiffness,including torsional stiffness and bending stiffness. Some components more sensitive to the torsional and bending stiffness of body shell have been detected. This paper also studies the stiffness improvement method and puts forward the suggestions to improve the weak components. It provides the theoretical background for the improvement of body stiffness.
