By the investigation to the architecture and cities of South Africa, I wrote this thesis which is about the city transition and architectural characters. The view point of the thesis is that since the first .Dutch immigrants came to the South Africa, the main non-nature factors influencing city development were: colonialism, mining industry and apartheid. The complexion of the history of the colonialism determined the mixture of the architecture styles. And the past apartheid still influences the present architecture design. About which modern style can be called the South Africa style, the viewpoint of the thesis is that it should be survey both in history view and reality. This thesis includes five chapters; the first chapter is also the foreword. As the principal part, the chapter three analyses some cases to summarize the three non-natural factors influence the city transition. The chapter four summarizes the Colonialism domination and apartheid's influence to the architectural styles and types.
