| After the thoughts of feminism being introduced to the research on urban space in 1970s for the first time, gender difference in space environment is widely focused on. However, lacking of practical, systematic, and objective study on the behavior and psychology of subject with different sexes and different ages in some specific space environment, the current research is confined to discussing and describing the phenomena of "sexism" in the design. This paper and the partner Wang Fang's subject-- the relationship between the environment of the college campus and the gender difference—are composed to be an integrated one. Focusing on the individual case, the affiliate kindergarten, the elementary school and the middle school of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in WuHan, in this paper the author did field survey, analysis and research by using comprehensive research strategies including interview, questionnaire and etc. The research comprises three parts: after a comprehensive field survey for the kindergarten in the first phase, we found that among children around five with different sex there's actually obvious difference of behavior and psychology, not as most people think that the difference doesn't exist. And it reveals that this difference really has some relation to school environment, but it is neglected and obliterated at designer's ease. Then we collected data in the second phase from elementary school for students of grade 3 to grade 6 to research the change trend of the difference. In the third part we investigated the middle school, and it showed that in some aspect the difference are expanded, but others are just on the contrary. Throughout analyzing all this trends, this paper comes up with a way of improving the environment in which gender difference is neglected and obliterated. We hope this research can provide both instructive advice for the following phase of the investigation in the college campus and a solid reference for research in other urban space. In addition, the research method of gender difference in campus environment is an initial exploration for the whole urban space. |
