Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) provide a unique set of opportunities and challenges to the drive designer. On the positive side ,PMSM enjoy unique advantages of unsurpassed efficiency and power density characteristics which are primarily responsible for their wide appeal. PMSM are now widely used in the servo control systems. This paper is mainly about the vector control system of PMSM, corporated with Ningbo Haitian corporation. Based on the demand of the program and practical application, this paper designs a control system made use of TMS320F240 and give the process of its development. In the first chapter, the background of the PM machines is described. Distinctions between control techniques for the two major classes of PM machines introduced in the following section—trapezoidal and sinusoidal—are discussed in detail. The main factors of PMSM control system are also reviewed .In the second chapter, the theory of vector controlled sytem is introduced. The control system is designed based on 16-bit Digital Signal Processor TMS320F240 of TI corporation. The Hardware design of the system is introduced in the third chapter. The forth chapter proposed an estimation method of initial rotor position for PMSM without a position sensor. The principle of the estimation is based on the variation of the current response caused by the magnetic saturation of the stator core when the voltage vector is applied to the motor. In the fifth chapter, by means of the average value method, analyzes the dead-time effect on SVPWM inverters, and the dead-time effect on the control system. Especially, zero-current clamping phenomenon and the output voltage distortion are analyzed. Dead-time compensation methods are also proposed in the paper, and is proved to be effective by the compensated current waveform. The paper is summarized at the end.
