As a new-style supporting and retaining structure, reinforced retaining wall has been applied in various civil engineering due to its prominent predominance. However, it is difficult to solve the practical problems by any single calculation method. Because of the diversity of reinforcement materials and the complexity of interaction mechanism between reinforcement and soil. In this paper, based on the high compound reinforced retaining wall located at the athletic field of the No. 3 Middle School in Pan Zhihua city, the conventional calculation method, prototype measurement and finite element method are used to study and analysis the characteristics of the wall. It hopes to provide some useful reference for the design calculation and research analysis of similar projects in the future. The application and research results of the geosynthetics and reinforced retaining wall all over the world are comprehensively reviewed and analyzed. Combine with the actual conditions and design requirement of the project, the structure of the reinforced retaining wall is determined. With the conventional calculation method, the pull-out stability of the reinforcement materials and the external stability of the wall are studied. The prototype measurement of the high compound reinforced retaining wall is conducted during construction. It includes tie-bar tensile force, facing earth pressure, earth-fill settlement, the horizontal displacement of the face and contact pressure. The results represent the actual stress and deformation of the whole reinforced retaining wall. Based to the analysis of the nonlinear finite element method and the constitutive relation of the soil, the construction process of incremental loading situation of the high compound reinforced retaining wall is numerically simulated, using the finite element software. The 4-nodes quadrilaterals solid element, plain strand cable, and Timoshenko beam are used in the simulation. Through the numerical simulation, the stress, deformation of the wall and the tension force distribution of the tie-bar are obtained . Comparison analyse of the research results of the conventional calculation, prototype measurement and finite element numerical simulation shows that they agree with each other very well. This demonstrates that the existing design theories are reasonable and the finite element simulation for complex retaining wall are practicable.
