The modern industry requires the drive mechanisms have flexibility. Adjustable mechanism is one of such flexible mechanisms, which can carry out several tasks. The switch between tasks of adjustable mechanisms is implemented manually or by other exterior control equipment to adjust the parameter of mechanisms. It is irrelevance with the change of environment and the carrying object, which reduces the flexibility and automaticity of adjustable mechanisms. At the same time, another new-fashioned mechanism, variable DOF (Degree of freedom) mechanisms, i.e. variable structure mechanisms, also gets special attention. It transforms structure by appending restriction as well as force restriction and gets application in many fields. The research on variable DOF mechanisms already becomes one of the important directions of the development of modern mechanisms, and it is a crucial aspect of mechanism innovation.This paper brings forward a typical variable DOF mechanism, which can acclimatize itself to the character of objects, including shape, dimension and weight so avoid the exterior adjustment. The mechanism also can be applied to object carrying and separating. Therefore this mechanism is of higher flexibility, reliability and automaticity.Function generation synthesis and path generation synthesis of this variable DOF mechanism are carried through, to realize the given relation between input link and output link's corresponding revolving angle as well as the relation between input link's revolving angle and the centre of the columned object. Mathematic models about the two instances are set up respectively and Mathematica is used to solve them; after obtaining the solution, mechanisms modeling, simulation and verification are progressed by software Autodesk Inventor to make sure that the solution meets the movement needed.Finally, this generalized linkage mechanism, which is self-adaptive and can achieve multi-tasks, needs the sustainer link and restriction link as well as the object character constraint to remodel and retain the structure. Therefore in this mechanism two torsional springs are required to offer and maintain the required torsion. Thus rigidity of the torsional springs must be in some range to implement the preconcerted movement. Therefore in the synthesis we should consider not only the motion synthesis but also the object weight and geometrical condition. Statics is applied to obtain the torsion expression in this paper. Choose parts to analyze and obtain two torsional spring's torsion expression, which is related to the mechanism dimension, angle, object weight and drive torsion. According to the expression, we can gain the exact value of torsional spring's rigidity.
