The impact of the diesel engine emissions on human health has been paid attention worldwide, strict emission legislations have been made in many countries. Research institutions and diesel engine manufacturers are constantly researching and developing new technology to control the diesel engine emissions. Biodiesel is a regenerate energy taking biomass as raw material. It is a kind of promising alternative fuel and has great meanings to the environment protection and the development of ournational economy.This paper have studied the producing methods of biodiesel, the physical and chemical characteristics of biodiesel and their effects on combustion and emissions. The 13-mode emissions of CO, HC, NOx and smoke of a DI diesel engine YZ4102QF using both diesel and biodiesel as fuels are measured. The influence on emissions of loads at constant speed and the fuel injection timing and the mixture ratio of blending biodiesel into diesel are analysed. Results show that biodiesel engine has the same power as diesel engine, but fuel consumption of biodiesel is 10% higher than diesel. The CO , HC and smoke emissions of biodiesel engine are lower than diesel engine on most modes, but NOx emission is higher slightly. When the diesel engine is fueled with biodiesel, the 13-mode weighted specific emissions of CO, HC and PM are 34.6 %, 40.2%and28.9% lower than with diesel fuel respectively, but the NOx emission is 6.63% higher than with diesel. The effects on emissions of blends of biodiesel with diesel are in proportion to the mixture ratio.In this paper, a simulation programme of soot emission formation are compiled taking mainly consider of the influence of the oxygen in fuel on the emissions. Based on the measured indicator diagram, the in-cylinder soot mass are calculated. The calculation results are verified by the data converted from the experiment results.
