Spacevehicles such as spacecraft and space shuttle are subjected to severe aerothermal environment with the peak heating at height of 60~90km while they maneuver to reentry the earth's atmosphere.Arc-heated wind tunntls characterized by the capability of simulating high gas enthalpy and low surface pressure and heat flux and long duration play important role in spacevehicle's TPS tests, ranging from material ablation tests to thermal-structure tests.The development of blunted wedge experimental technique has been involved in upgrading CARDC's arc-heated wind tunnel to meet the demands of TPS tests of "sheng zhou"manned spacecraft.High temperature flow over a bluntd wedge, which has been widely studied during 1960s-1970s,can simulate the surface flow conditions of spacecraft and other spacevehicles .Use of blunted wedge will enhance the test capability of arc heated wind tunnel to a wider range of parameters and larger sample size. U.s and Russia have developed and used large blunted wadge holders in their arc-heated factilties.Both engineering calculation and numerical simulation methods were usd to study the high temperature flow over a bluntel wedge in arc jets to provide theoretical prediction data for the design of a blunted wedge holder and test scheme and for the analysis of test results.The calibrating results of the flow over the newly developed holder using newly manufactured probe and heat flux sensors show reasonable agreement with the calculating results.Two kinds of candidate material ablation tests of the spacecraft were conducted using the holders, which demostated the holders' capability to meet the demands of the test requirements with a wider range of parametric simulation in high temperatare arc jets .
