Reactive power optimization in power system is an effective means to improve voltage quality, reduce network losses and ensure power system operates in a secure and economical way. With the development and perfection of the theory of power market, the assistant service of reactive power is no longer volunteer .On the basis reactive power pricing, this paper consider the secure and practical operation of power system and add these constraints into objective function in the form of penalty functions. Then mathematical model for reactive power optimization of regional network in the circumstance of power market is set up to get the maximum economic benefits. When used to solve the problem of nonlinear optimization, genetic algorithm has the characteristics of good robustness, global convergence ,so it is applied to solve the problem of reactive power optimization in this paper and on the basis of the features of district power network improvements are made. Then simulation is carried out on a district power network consisting of twenty-two nodes and thirty-five branches. Results show that the proposed model for reactive power optimization is reasonable and the improvements on genetic algorithm are feasible and effective.
