High request was put forward for monitor of cutting process along with cutting process is developing to high speed, high precision and high automatization, but all kinds of automatization equipment manufacture system can't monitor. In order to exert good performance of high automatization equipment, ensure machining quality and improve manufacture efficiency, it is more important to monitor and control for state of tool machining process. A lot of investigation indicate that every small change of cutting state can be reflected via the change of cutting force. Measuring cutting force is one of the most common method in domestic and external investigation. But parts of machine tool will be changed more or less using this measure, and it will influence the characteristic of system, especially high precision numerical control machine tool. In allusion to the problem a new type of cutting dynamometer is designed, which structure size and state of using are similar to general lathe tool.On the basis of investigation of the piezoelectricity effect of quartz disc, the key dimensions of the cutting dynamometer based on piezoelectricity effect are designed by Finite Element Method, and then a new-type piezoelectric cutting sensor of own property right is successfully manufactured. The outstanding feature of the new cutting dynamometer contrary to other type of dynamometer sensor is that it is more similar to general lathe tool. It can be installed on knife rest, so it is same wit practice state of cutting. Sensitivity of dynamometer is more high, especially main cutting force can attain 7.4pC/N. The calibration results show that it has high static linearity, and its natural frequency is greater than 5 kilohertz, so the cutting dynamometer has fully reached the dynamometer standard stipulated by CIRP-STCC.Finally, in order to measure the cutting force, the orthogonal experiment method in which the three factors are the diameter of cutting, feed and spindle speed is performed. According to Analysis of Variance, it is suggested that deepness of cutting is more significant than feed, and than cutting speed. Through Multiple Linear Regression, the experiential expression of cutting dynamometer 45 steel is obtained. Hereby it proves that the performance of the new-type cutting dynamometer reach the practical requirements which can be used in practical measurement.
