There is a long history to disinfect drinking water by ultraviolet (UV) light, especially in Europe, where the history could be traced to around one hundred years ago. As we all know, human beings depend on water for maintaining lives as well as air and sunshine. With the development of national economy and the advance in life quality of residents, people become to pay widely attention to the municipal water needed every day. Whereas the disadvantages of traditionally chemical-treat method in drinking water produce, UV disinfection wins the expansive future in virtue of safe, well-preformed, rapid and effective ability to make the fatal microorganisms inactive or dead but no byproduct. A summary has been made at first on UV disinfection theory and the diverse conditions of its research and application in our country and overseas. It turns out that the existing UV reactor installed straight UV bulb consumes power highly on account of its fallacious structure. An approach to calculate the UV intensity distribution and UV dosage is figured out in this paper and a product of Taiwan WaterTec Company has been analyzed as a typical instance. As to the problem mentioned above on the structure, the UV intensity field of ring-shape UV bulb has been studied by the researchers in Rochester Institute of Technology, NY, who has been figured out a point of view that the ring bulb can perform much better than the straight one in UV reactor for drinking water as the result of the more uniform intensity field. With the purpose of practice, in this paper, a new reactor is designed eventually. It is energy effecient compared with commercial unit. A ring shape bulb is used in the reactor, whose voltage and power is 12 Volts and 10 Watts respectively. The compute method and process has been expounded as well. A serial of experiments had been done to validate the accordance of the academic calculation and the real effect on making microorganisms inactive under various flow rates and different UV output by changing voltage. Finally, a conclusion has been drawn that ring-shape-bulb UV reactor is safer, more practical and less power consumption compared with the current commercial unit.
