Brake disc is a very important component in automobile brake system and running quality of which has a direct bearing on driving safety of automobile. Iron brake disc used widely at present with low thermal conductivity, easy hot cracking and low wear resistance needs to be improved. It can be seen from related references that metal matrix composites brake disc with light weight and better properties will replace the traditional iron brake disc in the future. Moreover, automobile industry is one of our country' s pillar industries and developed rapidly in recent years. The requirement of automobile brake disc is giant due to large increase of automobile output. Therefore, it is of momentous significance to study SiC_p/Al composite automobile brake disc.Automobile brake disc of SiC_p/Al composite is produced by using metal mold gravity casting according to the development status of SiC_p/Al composite fabricating process. It is very important to shorten design cycle and optimize casting technique when designing casting mold. The metal mold for automobile brake disc was designed by using Unigraphics software because it is accurate and fast to 3-D design and assemble metal mold and to draw engineering drawings through Unigraphics software. Metal mold was designed with Unigraphics software according to designed casting process. The results of mold fining and solidification process numerical simulation by using Z-Cast software show that liquid metal fills up the mold smoothly , risers feed casting well, no casting defect exists in casting and the casting process is reasonable.One of the key problems in fabricating SiC_p/Al composite is that Al is not wet with SiC.
