The Zipingpu Hydro Project is one of the big ten infrastructure projects in the developing Western of China. Its underground structure passes through coal shale or pure coal, which contains flammable and explosive dangerous gas. Safety issue becomes concerns. The gas explosion happens when three conditions are matched: one is that the gas percentage is within 5% to 16%; the second is that a high temperature source triggers the explosion; the third is that the oxygen in the air is bigger than 12%. The purpose of the precautions is to make some measures to break one of those three conditions. In other words, to control the percentage of explosive gas, and to constrain the fire source, are the basics. Our study proves that strong ventilation, effective monitor, usage of explosion control utilities, and intensive management of gas control, can prevent gas explosion effectively. Based on the exploration of the gas control and prevention techniques in the Diversion tunnel of Zipingpu Hydro Project, this article comes up with efficient measures of gas control and management in the construction of hydroelectric project. Some emergency plans are also given when explosion. It is proved by practice that our measures are successful. Though the gas percentage was higher than the standard several times, proper and timely measures were taken to prevent explosion. It is useful for gas control of similar projects.
