This paper introduced the theory, function, history, actuality and the future development trends of the circuit breaker, and expatiated the intention and significance of the task, then expressed the virtual prototyping technology and ADAMS Software. The mechanism movement of NF-100 molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) was simulated using ADAMS, and the disadvantage of traditional molded case circuit breaker was analyzed. A new contact system according to the requirements of improving was put forward, and its virtual prototyping model and operating mechanism movement was simulated. The performance parameters of new contact system was tested and compared with traditional system to validate the advantage of new contact system on mechanical performance.The characteristics of new designed contact system are as follows: It breaks through the frame of traditional contact system; the relative movement between mobile contact and immobile contact is comparatively gliding instead of the collision of traditional contact; a insulated solid block medium will detach the two contacts entirely while the two contacts detaching. Compared with traditional contact, these characteristics bring many distinct advantages: the bounce of contact will not happen because the contacts do not collide when switch on; the mobile contact and immobile contact are separated entirely by insulated medium while switch off, arc was eliminated automatically. In addition, the fabric is very simple and do not need to design arc chamber. The intensity of solid block medium is high on mechanical and electricity performances, so arc will not happen after switch off; the relative gliding of two contacts will eliminate the oxide film that is unfavorable to conduct electricity.The virtual prototyping technology was used to the design of circuit breaker. ADAMS is powerful software on mechanical simulation. Apply ADAMS to the analysis of traditional contact and new contact, it saved time during the design, also improve the efficiency and save money. A lot of useful dates were got by dynamic simulation but by experiments.
