Plan And Design Of Children's Play Environments In Urban Open Spaces

Play is the nature of children. It is an important way to promote children's intellectual and physical development,and to cultivate their senses of collectivity, responsibility and team spirits. Children's sound development calls for a quality play environment. Urban children always visit those open spaces such as streets, squares and parks. Therefore, the quality of those open spaces directly influences children's enjoyment of play rights. How to create for children encouragingly quality playgrounds should attract our attention and focus. At present, there exist lots of problems of children's play environments in such open spaces. The problems are as follows: Lack of public playgrounds, limited equipments and hidden danger. This paper explores from the perspective of children's play environments in open spaces, and tries to come up with some suggestions about the design and plan of their play environments according to the writer's observation of the activities of the children in open spaces. Chapter 1: Simply discuss the origin, the background, the framework, the contents and significance of this study. Chapter 2: Basic studies of the children's play environments. It includes the components of the environments, physical and psychological features of children, the content and organization forms of play, and the history and development of the children's play environments. Chapter 3: Starts with the conception and functions of the urban open spaces, it analyzes the features, importance and existing problems of the children's play environments in it. Chapter 4: Based on the investigation of the children's play environments in streets and lanes and combined with some successful examples, it provides some suggestions to promote the quality of the play environments. Chapter 5: Based on the investigation and the analysis of the features and existing problems of the children's play environments in pedestrian mall and squares, it provides some suggestions to promote the quality of the play environments. Chapter 6: Based on the analysis of the importance and design points of the children's play environments in parks, it provides some suggestions to promote the quality of the play environments. Chapter 7: It explores a way to construct high-quality children's play environments in open spaces from three aspects: systematic construction, rating system and organization and policy guarantee. Chapter 8: At the end of the paper, some points that we should pay attention to in the process of the construction of the children's play environments in open spaces are emphasized.
