This paper studied the application in power systems of the sensitivity analysis and genetic algorithm and studied the position and capacity of power capacitor in reactive power optimization of distribution system.Reactive power optimization mainly considers on-load tap changer (OTLC), the optimal capacity of the capacitor, the voltage of generator under the steady load. The paper combined the active power loss and capacitor capital to improve the system voltage and reduce the power loss and maximize the income. The reactive power optimization mathematics mode was built based on these. The main approach was to optimize the capacitor position and capacity to reach the index described above. The paper used the sensitivity analysis to get the value of capacitor position and located the bigger value as the optimal position. And .used the genetic algorithm to optimize the capacity in those position. In sum the paper combined the two methods to increase the speed of the algorithm and benefit.Corresponding software using C++ is programmed according to the algorithm mentioned above. The calculation of the distribution network of Pingliang demonstrated that the proposed method is correct and effective.
