When we take to the aseismatic design of cable-stayed bridge, the focal point is the internal force and the displacement of the cable-stayed bridge should be the lowest possible under the seismic shock. While, this two aspects are always contradiction. If we want small internal force reaction, we would take great displacement, vice versa. This paper presented the aseismatic method with viscous damper and verifier its effect with finite element analysis. At the beginning, this paper introduced the analysis program ANSYS and the elements, and discussed how to make the model closed to the practical situation when we established the cable-stayed bridge finite element model, and created three models: without aseismatic measure, with cable retainer and with viscous damper. Then, through modal analysis, response spectrum analysis, time-history analysis and the secondary stability analysis of bridge tower, it compared the effect of cable retainer and viscous damper. At last, it came to that the viscous damper could lower the displacement and internal force reaction at the same time. So it can increase the aseismatic ability and the durability of the cable-stayed bridge, and can accord with the idea of the aseismatic design.
