Square steel-pipe truss is a structure which effectively unions the mature truss manufacturing technology and the new steel-pipe material. In this article, the emphasis is put on the theoretical study about the secondary stress of square steel-pipe truss. Based on FEA software ANSYS and according to different geometric parameters, 60 truss models with hinge joints or rigid joints are presented, the distributions of secondary stress and the influences on the mechenical behavior of total structure are analysed. The results indicate that the scondary stress on several links has reached the permissible value, and changes regularly following the change of geometric parameters. It should be considered in engineering design. The whole paper includes five chapters. In the first one, the characteristics -. applications and development processes of Hollow Structural Section are introduced in brief, furthermore the current study status of secondary stress is elaborated. In the second one, the calculation methods of ANSYS and the theoretical bases are set forth. In the third one, some simple supported span truss models are presented. Combined with large numbers of graphes and tables, the differences of internal foeces between models with hinge joints or rigid joints are comparatively analysed. In the fourth one, the two-span continuous truss models are provided by FE simulation, also with theoretical deduciton. In the fifth one, the above chapters are generalized, the further exploration items are proposed.
