With the development of modern society, the electrical power becomes more and more important than before. People have the higher requirements to the power system, such as safety, reliability and quality. Common techniques can do something limited to improve power transportation, transformation and storage. With the further development of superconducting science and technology, good solution will be done to the problems that electrical science and technology meet. This paper firstly indicates the trend of the development of future power system, the advantages and the development of superconducting transformer. The reduction of heat load leaked from current leads is very important in the stability and economical operation of superconducting devices, especially for superconducting transformer. Then, this paper introduces the development and actuality state of current leads study, and classifies current leads. The research of current leads which connects 67K~77K temperature zone with room temperature zone is one of the trends of current leads research. And we should pay more attention to it. The main methods to design current leads are thermodynamic analysis method and finite element analysis method (FEM). So we set up the model for conduction-cooled current leads, emulate the heat exchange process by calculation, and optimize the design of current leads to reduce the heat leak. To deal with the problem that space in the transformer is not long enough for the current leads, parts of the current leads wind into the shape of solenoid to extend the heat exchange path. A conclusion that heat leak will be affected by different positions of solenoid-shaped parts on the current leads, has been drawn from the compare research. A concept design is also done. A experiment plan to measure heat leak of current leads has been design to determine the rightness of emulation. This paper describes the draft designs of current leads for high temperature superconductor transformer (HTS transformer), according to the requirements of HTS transformer, and shows the results of a heat load evaluation of current leads for HTS transformer used on electrical locomotive, founded on FEI theory.
