With the increasing demands of residential air-conditioning system and the developing technology of ice-storage, the study of applying ice-storage system to residential building should be extended from the feasibility analysis to the reasonable operation and technical optimality.Being integrated with the character of the Shanghai residential building cooling load, the paper is focus on the study about rationality of plant scheme and optimality of operation strategy. The character of residential cooling load was analyzed on several views.Firstly, to analyze the character of residential building cooling load, the overall cooling load and the cooling load profile on the design day and during whole cooling period of one residential model was calculated by software equest, meanwhile, the operation hours of four type of part load rate during the whole cooling period was summarized.Then, on the basis of residential cooling load profile, the capability scheme of the chiller and ice bank of ice-storage system was calculated under different operation strategies, two parameters including the influential factor of load character and electric power price structure was developed to analyze its effect on plant scheme.According to the operation character of residential ice-storage system, the optimal model developed by dynamic programming method used the least operation cost as an object function. The result of optimal operation strategy was solved with the MATLAB program to gain the optimal operation strategy. That is the optimal hourly discharge rate and hourly chiller output. Then the plant scheme and test data on the spot of one residential ice storage system was applied to the program. The optimal strategy under various part load rate was compared to the practical operation strategy. Using the results to discuss the effect of decreasing the operation cost of different strategy under the typical time-of-use utility rate structure of current residential building when applying the ice storage system to the residential building.Finally, based on the typical residential building model, the first investment estimate and operation cost estimate were calculated to gain simple investment returnperiod and discuss the guideline of choosing the reasonable plant scheme when applying the ice storage system to the residential building..
