The necessity to study optimal operation of water supply network in xi'an is discussed, which based on the existing state of water supply network in xi'an and the tend in development of optimal operation of water supply network. The key components of the optimal operation, such as the model of water prediction, the macroscopic model of water distribution system and the optimal operation model, are studied systematically.The present research status is summarized at first. After systems analysis, the operation flow and data flow of water supply system in xi'an are studied in response to its demand. According to the changing characteristic of water and analysis theory of autocorrelation, the data pattern of hourly water demand is identified; optimal selection methods for the model of water prediction are raised. Exponential smoothing and self-adaptive seasonal exponential smoothing are used in water prediction; the prediction precision is advanced and can reach the engineering needs. The macroscopic model of water distribution system in xi'an is founded by integrated utilization of correlative variable coefficient and variable standard deviation of pressure tap' data. The secondary optimal operation model is set up based on the system's actual running data. Some independent districts of water distribution network in xi'an are divided by utilization of graph theory; the optimal operation of the independent districts is researched finally.
