A summary of fireproof methods used for steel structures is presented in the paper, including new materials, advanced techniques and constructional treatments. A detailed comparison among fireproof methods is made and their applications are appraised. All these information is expected for reference to engineers who undertake fireproof design of steel structures. The temperature rise behavior of H-section steel columns connected with wall slabs of ALC material is analyzed by using Finite Element Software ANSYS. The temperature distributions in the cross sections of columns with fire proof coating or boards is calculated based on ISO834 standard temperature rise curve. The reasons why thermal gradient in cross section is adverse to steel column subjected to eccentricity compression is discussed in the paper. Furthermore, Analysis are made by ANSYS to find out how much the thermal gradient impacts on the stability of the steel column.Based on a large number of parametric studies, some practical formule are proposed for engineering use. They are:(1) The value of thermal gradient in the cross section of H section steel column connected with wall slabs of ALC, which is subjected to fire with protection of fireproof coating(2) The coefficient of decrease in stability limit of steel columns subjected to fire, which is coused by thermal gradient effects.
