Since the technique of reinforcement earth had been discovered in 1960s, the method of reinforcement and design theory had been studied. Meanwhile, the technique had been and widely used for engineering purpose since it is easily constructed, time-saved, low-cost and widely applicable. Among the research work, the action principle and law of reinforcement earth is an important subject which is to be explored in this thesis by the way of experiment.At present, four methods are mainly used for reinforcement earth research: prototype test, model test, three-axial compression test, direct shear test and drawing test. Indoor model test is adopted in this thesis.The indoor model method was used by many former researcher to study the horizontally reinforcement sand soil subgrade on strip foundation, and many results were generated, however, as for the limitation of observation method of deformation, the characteristic of deformation failure of reinforcement subgrade was not sufficiently studied, which lead to the vagueness of reinforcement principle and failure mode. On the base of former conclusion, a series of indoor experiments were done and digital photography, non-target method, deformation measurement technique were used to generate the image analyses results, combined with pressure distribution on the subgrade and load-displacement curve, the action form and principle of subgrade was studied, which is reinforced by three different patterns. On the base of these work, the action principles and failure mode was studied, some conclusion was achieved and some rational suggestions were brought forward.In addition, vertically reinforcement sand soil subgrade on strip foundation, which was seldom studied by domestic and abroad researchers, was studied by the above-mentioned method to recognize the action principle and failure mode. Some rules and laws of vertically reinforcement were concluded and further compared with horizontally reinforcement.In the finality, further studies required by these problems are discussed.
