A review on pollutant control technology and emissionregulations for heavy duty diesel engines was given in this thesis.Based on mechanism analysis of diesel engine emissions, thestrategy and artifices for reducing engine pollution were discussed.Three aspects of improvement works were conducted in this thesis toWD615 series of diesel engines:1. The intake and exhaust systems were improved by adoption ofa high performance turbocharger and optimization of intake andexhaust ports. The outcome swirl ratio decreased from 2.43 to 1.80,the flow coefficients of intake and exhaust ports increasedrespectively by 24.7% and 50%, and the gas exchanging loss becamesmaller.2. The combustion chamber of diesel engine was optimizedthrough project experimental comparison. The configurationparameters of ωchamber with straight edge for Europe I and withshrink mouth for Europe II were determined respectively, byexperiments.3. Fuel system was improved. The injection pressure wasincreased from 80 MPa to 105 MPa, the injection nozzle parameterswere changed from 4×0.32 to 7×0.25.By the improvement above, the exhaust emission of newWD615 series of diesel engines met Europe II standard completely, and the engine performance was improved remarkable.
