On The Emerging Notions Of "Tectonics" In The Contemporary Chinese Architecture

With a review of the development of architectural culture since 1949, the thesisobjectively analyzed the social and historic background of the emerging "Tectonics"in the contemporary Chinese architecture. Nevertheless, it also did some textualresearch on Tectonics etymology, and then retrospected the developmental history oftectonic theory. With the view of Tectonics, the thesis not only brought forward thecontents and issues, but also indicated the realistic significance and methods of ourcontemporary tectonic study. In the middle part of the thesis, it put a heavy emphasis on introducing theChinese tectonic tradition, and also elaborately analyzed the active research ofcontemporary architect from their ideology to projects. On the other hand, based onthe analysis of some current essays and projects in China, the thesis acknowledged thenotions of Tectonics which faced the reductive inclination tendency and splittingvalues problem in the developing Chinese architecture. By analyzing the tectonic culture and considering the architectural essence, thethesis finally indicated that Tectonics had a revelatory effect in our architecturaleducation and we should objectively look on its purpose in the development ofcontemporary Chinese architecture. To sum up, Tectonics is a organizing principle anda choice, and the studies of tectonic culture should not be a shortdated behavior. With a hope to make more extensive understand in Tectonics through thediscussing of this thesis, the author wish it can promote a more in-depth studies intectonic culture and at last it may do some benefit to today's Chinese architecture.
