Abstract/Summary:
Facing the crisis of modernism architecture, people began to realize that the rationality and universality are not the destination of human being. Post modernism raised a lot of theories. However, most of the characters they advocated could been found in ancient Chinese gardens. Through the space analysis of Master-of-Nets Garden, the paper trys to explain the space constitution and the reason of its complicacy. Thus, it leads to a discussing of the possibility of putting the rule of ancient Chinese garden into the modern architecture design. It includes analysis of factors and organization. The former which is divided into four parts proves that garden is derived from certain traditional types and there are dual rules of visual-tactile and static-mobile. The later focuses on path, vision and the sense of sight. Their entanglement with one another is the source of the complicacy. The analysis leads to a conclusion that the division, the connection and the extension of the space are serve for the aim of "small shows large" . At the end of the paper, there are three examples from Mies and Koolhaas which intend to find the relationship between modern architecture and ancient Chinese garden. In a word, learning from ancient Chinese garden should search the substances behind the surface and should combine the contemporary spirit.
