Because traffic takes an important role in daily life, traffic safety and efficiency become critical problems. To solve these problems, real-time information becomes to be the key element. For this aim, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is developed rapidly in recent years.Generally speaking, there are two typical kinds of ITS: Road-Vehicle Communication (RVC) and Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC). A perfect ITS will most likely only be a combination of IVC and RVC in order to make collision avoidance in complex scenarios. But for several reasons, IVC is adopted in our project. This paper presents a simulated system for Inter Vehicle Communication which is mainly based on DSR routing protocol. The architecture of VANet (Vehicle Ad hoc Network) is based on OSI model. Our study concentrates on three main elements: wireless access interface, routing protocol and applications. As network develops so fast in the last decade, there are a lot of wireless access interface options. Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) is an emerging technology with intriguing performance and benefits that provides a critical communication link for future Intelligent Transportation Systems. DSRC technology will provide secure, reliable communication links between vehicles and infrastructure safety subsystems that can increase highway safety.Routing protocol is the most challenge task in Ad hoc network because of its rapid variable topology. Many experiments have proved that AODV and DSR are the most efficient routing protocol in Ad hoc network. We try to apply these two reactive protocols in our simulation in order to compare its performance. As in Ad hoc network, a node should have the ability to get in and out freely, and can communicate with any node in the network. So the whole system is composed of three parts: IP discovery, route search and data exchange. The whole system has run stably in the course of test and measurement, and the system has basically implemented the basic function of a node in VANet.As the technology of ITS becomes more and more mature and new technologies develop so fast, we believe that ITS will be applied in our real life very soon. This simulation can be the basis and reference of the further research for vehicular communication.
