American education-psychologist Biggar believes that an individual's internal behaviors are determined by the external environments of the living spaces he/she is in. If the external environment fails to catch people's attention and thus interact with them, it then can have no way to affect their personal psyches or behaviors. But as long as it does, it will structure personal spaces and exert great influence on individuals. Colleges and universities are like mini-societies. Everything in it, buildings and trees, will undoubtedly affect students' psyches, silently but firmly shaping their personalities. Therefore, we should make our campuses clean and tidy, bright and fresh. The liveliness will definitely provide a light and charming environment for the students to relax after their hard studies. For me, the construction of a campus environment should be based on the goal of raising students' psychological qualities and building a cultural atmosphere that best fits physical conditions into spiritual pursuits. Such an environment may help students obtain healthy growth. Our aim is to make every corner and each scene on a campus tell the scientific and cultural information it embodies, emitting the public aesthetic emotions it incorporates. As Mr. Jordan, the first President of Stanford University, said in a speech delivered at the opening of a term, "Long and solemn Lianlang pillar will be listed on the part of the education of students. Four homes, each stone can teach people to be aware of a decent and honest." It is just in such a concern of high intensity that students gain various stimulations and repeated psychological experiences, and thus they generate corresponding emotions in themselves that bring about the effect of spiritual catharsis. After fulfilling the basic psychological demands of students, it is more important to fulfill their demands at a higher level. We are entering a new era of education in which both campus environments and socio-economic environments have changed tremendously. Thus, it entails higher and more requirements for campus environments. An ideal campus environment should possess spiritual qualities withits own characteristics. There should be a harmonious relationship among buildings, each one having its own characteristics while corresponding with others, forming an organic whole and displaying harmony between human and nature. A campus should also be open so as to provide free space for academic communications and pursuits. In a fast changing world today, a campus still cannot escape the specificity of time and space. It belongs to a community, a locale, a history. No matter how many new constructions to embody the new time, what it treasures most is the cultural precipitation. We must preserve old buildings and plants. They are the embodiments of history, culture and tradition. Students may touch the traces of past in such an environment that preserves historical information of humanity. They may go back to the history of the school while their contemporary emotional and social needs are met.
