Geomagnetic storm will affect the normal function of high-voltage power grid by thegeomagnetically induced current (GIC). The paper puts forward the study about theamplitude, distribution of induced earth surface potential and effects on the power grid basedon the discovered relative fact. The study is very important to forecast and assessments of theinduced earth surface potential. The paper studies the pivotal question of calculating the grid GIC of the theory andarithmetic of induced earth surface potential along transmission corridor. Through theanalyses on the complex image method and the plane wave method, the article advances toapply the MT to establish the horizontal layered earth model and make use of the verticalbased on the transmission corridor direction in the plane wave method. The improved planewave method makes the result more accurate. In the end, the simulation example based on thepractical power system is presented.
