Our country is a seismic country where earthquake frequently happens and where seismic area is widely distributed, the area where earthquake frequently happens is just some of undeveloped towns and countries. According to towns and countries building's characteristic, the modification on building's structural irrationality and on shortage of conventional method, or strengthening anti-seismic techniques, these has become a serious problem to prevent earthquake and to reduce seismic lost effectively in towns and countries. The advantage of wood is high strength and mass light, good workability, little dilatancy, high heat-insulation ratio;the building of timber frame has a long history in our country. So when we rational design and strictly construct, the timber building don't like someone's imagine: "wind penetration in all side;big noise, and easily slump". Timber frame building is very useful to resist earthquake and can meet the towns and countries construct demand.Timber frame building in towns and countries inherited ancient timber construction building's feature, in order to find out its characteristic we must know ancient timber construction building's development. Thus in the beginning, we introduce the development of ancient timber building. And then one of timber frame building that is extensive used in north of our country is on the quasi-static test, we analyse its antiseismic performance.Form displacement, strain, length of crack and so on ,we can see timber frame meeting the challenge of anti-seismic, The results show that the frame has good anti-seismic performance. Theoretical research based on the quasi-static test, organized loading-displacement hysteretic curves, found out timber frame's approximate yield point;then studied the timber frame's capability of plastic deformation, dissipation of seismic energy and ductility. In the end, simulating wood by set different elastic ratio in mainframe finite element software , timber frame's finite element analysis are tentatively discussed. It provides some foundation for timber frame's finite element analysis application in civil engineering.
