In this paper, the electromagnetic problems of the passive feedback coils and active control coils that control the instability of vertical displacement of plasma in EAST are discussed. The primary engineering design of the active control coils is also completed.The induced currents on the passive feedback coils, the electromagnetic loads and the electrical parameters of coils are analyzed in this paper firstly. On the basis of producing the mathematical model of calculating the induced currents on the passive feedback coils, the distribution and variation of the induced currents and the electromagnetic loads are given. The equivalent time constants of coils are also given. Then about the electromagnetic problems of the active control coils, the electrical parameters, the induced voltages and the temperature rising of coils are analyzed. The electrical parameters under the different connections way of the coils are given by numerical calculation. By dividing the vacuum vessel into reasonable segments, the induced voltages of the coils due to plasma current and the vacuum vessel induced current changing are calculated. The temperature rising of the coils is gotten through calculating energy losses of the coils. All these parameters are important to the design of the magnets and the power system, and also provide the evidence for the experiment of controlling the plasma instability.Finally, the engineering design of the active control coils is introduced in this paper. The problems like insulation, defending and configuration of the coils are resolved.
