The problems of continuous and discontinuous deformation in actual engineering are ubiquitous, the current numerical methods in dealing with it are suitable for either ideal continuum materials, or completely discontinuous media. On the one hand, such methods as FEM and BEM are based on the hypothesis of total continuity or equivalent continuity. On the other hand, there are discontinuous deformation analysis methods such as DDA and DEM, which are on the basis of the blocky theory and the assumption of discrete media. The numerical manifold method has been established elementarily and received worldwide attentions. In the paper, the NMM is lucubrated. It includes the following contents:(1) The early NMM program wrote by Shi in Dos has been improved in Windows OS, and which is proved by some examples.(2) Some numerical methods are discussed, such as FEM, EFGM, DDA etc. On the base of Method of Weighted Residuals, the try function and weighted function of NMM are studied.(3 ) The analysis of stress of gravity dam is studied by NMM, and the result is proved by FEM. Taking the ability of caculating large deformation of NMM, the order of slippage deformation of gravity dam is studied by safety reduction method, and the method to obtain the limited friction angle of interface between dam and foundation is established, and the stability against sliding of gravity dam is studied by NMM.(4) Taking one reservoir rock slops as the example, the rock slop stability is discussed, when the reservoir water level falls.
