This paper introduces CONCURRENT ENGINEERING(CE) deeply with new ideas and facts, combining the domestic and abroad reference documents and development of hydraulic crawler dragline excavator. At first, the conception of CE is defined. Then the innate character of CE is analysed, and two theories, product life cycle theory and concurrent design theory, are raised. After that, I research four key technologies. In the end, I make full use of CE in process of developing dragline excavator successfully. 1.the theoretical and practical foundation The part introduces the development process of CE chiefly, makes CE definition which quotes CE conception raised first by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA), analyses the innate character of CE, points out that CE emphasize to think its life cycle when designing product. Except for that, CE emphasize to face process and face object, and CE emphasize system integration and entire excellence. This paper points out two theories foundation: product life cycle theory and concurrent design theory, and expounds practice application about dragline excavator. 2.the key technology of CE First section introduces the technical structure of CE, which includes DFX technology, CAX technology, integrated product data exchange standard, design standard and product life cycle data storehouse technology. Key points include the organization and management of team, characteristic design system supporting concurrent design, CE and PDM, product design program evaluation synthesize and decision system. (1) The organization and management of team This part discusses the building and management tactics of team, the building principle of team, the creation of team cooperation environment and opposition coordination. (2) CE and PDM This part discusses the PDM definition in detail, builds up PDM system structure with support layer, facing object layer, function layer and customer layer, researches EPDM from enterprise reality. EPDM offers integrated structure for CE. (3) Characteristic design system supporting concurrent design This part points out layering design idea of product, which applies characteristic model creation method of layering design to support the concept design from top to bottom, the result can reflect whole design progress. In the real design, the upper design result is the lower design basis, the final design result can show the progress of every design, therefore it can maintain all design logic. This part discusses the characteristic evolution in design: at first, it has four stages: requirement design, concept design, initial design and detail design, then a new idea is raised that design progress is a progress of characteristic evolution, and the characteristic is composed of product character, assembly character, part character and basis character, in the end, the characteristic design is composed of structure design and attribute design. 3. Product design program evaluation synthesize and decision system This part discusses several evaluation and analysis methods in product development program, brings up program check and achievement check method, introduces Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) used in quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis and its application. 4. The application of CE in dragline excavator In the part, new product development flow chart is laid out, which is contrasted with old string development flow. We can draw a conclusion that CE can shorten product develop period, improve quality and lower cost effectively. This part introduces design idea and detail method from top to bottom with skeleton model function and means of designning in assmbly with Pro/ENGINEER and PDM method with Pro/INTRALINK.
