The modeling and three dimensional nonlinear FEM simulative analysis for concrete arch dam design is an important subject. In this paper, brief summary and contrast for the analytical methods of arch dam were conducted. People always adopt traditional single axle strength criterion, but the concrete strength criterion has something to do with the strength state intensity of concrete, and the concrete arch dam always works in multi-dimension strength state. Because of the early crack of concrete, inside defects and non-linear factors of the material itself, the concrete structure always works in nonlinear state, which shows that the relation of stress and strain is non-linear during the concrete dam working, and with the load increasing, it will be obvious. All these indicate that we must consider the non-linear factor in the concrete arc design. The author uses the multi-axle strength criterion, which can bitterly reflect true working state of the arch dams. Using William-Warnke strength criterion to judge whether the concrete is yielded, and adopting the plasticity theory to analyze after yielding.Most finite element software are difficulty in setting up and analyzing finite element simulative model of arch dam with accurate and high-efficient at present, and developing this software should spend many material resources and manpower. In this paper, the nonlinear FEM theory and its realization in ANSYS have been detailed studied. Using the APDL language and many kinds of ANSYS function on ANSYS6.1 platform, the author has designed a program which can better realize the three-dimension nonlinear finite element simulative analysis for concrete arch dam.For various kinds of load in arch dam, it is very important for temperature load analysis and calculation in concrete arc dam designing. This paper provides how to use FEM to analyze and solve the thermal stress field and thermal stress in concrete arc dam.Finally, the author realized three-dimension nonlinear finite element simulative analysis for Jiangxi Province Pingxiang city ShanKouYan arch dam, imitated the loading course of the arch dam and overload to destroy, analyzed its stress and displacement law, revealed the weak link of the dam, which have offered essential reference for design, optimization, constructing and operating of this arch dam.
