| The traditional settlement and the modern urban residence serve people as a region where we live in compact community. The contact space is an extension of the living space, but the inhabitants of the urban residence have a weak contact ideology than the members of the traditional settlement and their outdoor intercourse are of less activity too. I try to compare the makeup of the spatial material and the spirit modality of the inhabitants of the traditional settlement and the modern urban residence and the psychology and behaviors of their social intercourse to analyze the two's similarities and differences to find out the reasons. The purpose is to find out why the inhabitants' outdoor contact can have a long life, and make the reason the basis of the design of the contact space of the urban residence, also make a further search how to construct a comfortable and spry outdoor contact space in the urban residence. I want to construct a space that is full of the sense of attachment and approval.This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is an introduction. I give the purpose and the meaning of the research, content and frame. Then I set the boundaries of the concept of the associated problem and analyze the comparability of the traditional settlement and the modern urban residence. This part discusses the associated theories, including the psychologies and behaviors of social intercourse, intercourse behavior and space etc. In the thirth and fourth part, I make a comparison to the common characteristics of the outdoor contact space of the traditional settlement and the modern urban residence, analyze the two's space modality characteristics and spiritual and cultural ideas, the differences of the intercourse psychologies and behaviors, the characteristics of outdoor contact space Finally, I draw the conclusion of this paper and give the suggestion of the design of the outdoor contact space of the modern urban residence.
