| Residential construction has been the main issue of Chinese urban construction since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. And it occupies largeportion of Chinese residential market in the form of commercial housing after the initial housing assignment. However, its design process is largely based on plagiarism and supposition, details are found to be in lack of careful consideration.Designers always copy the whole housing layout without consideration of local environment and the actual needs of householders. On the other hand, personal decoration which leads to a massive waste of resources and severe housing modification also becomes a major problem. In fact, blind seeking of luxury, delicacy, extravagantness and large residential area does not radically promote the quality of residential buildings. In the meantime, maladjustment arising from actual application also becomes a major aspect of redecoration.Chinese modern congregated housing design is largely affected by westernmodern architectural trends. Types and scales of newly residential buildings rarely inherit from traditional residential building theories. In recent years, modern Chinese Society System and lifestyle are becoming more and more westernized, but cultural inheritance lasting for thousands of years will not fade. However, the complexity of Chinese learning for the foundation, Western learning for practicaluse leads to much maladjustment after these residential buildings are actual been used. However, the reason why and to what extent this maladjustment arises remains unclear. Engrossment of this issue promote a critical thinking of how to apply the Chinese traditional construction theory on design of modern urban residential buildings, which is based on the western congregated housing design theory. Certainly this theory was not first proposed by the author, Ju’er Hutong Courtyard Project and the Shenzhen Vanke Fifth Garden Project that are directed byLiangyong Wu are typical examples of optimizing urban housing design by usingelements of traditional residential buildings. However, only visible elements andsymbols of traditional housing are reserved on this new type of buildings, the fundamental residential system behind traditional housing are abandoned. This paper intends to investigate Chinese urban congregated housing and analyze the results by analysis of traditional residential system and using the high residential quality which was a consequence of its rigid hierarchies. The transitionspace from outdoor to indoor of residential buildings, which is the study object, was separated from the function of residential housing. By utilizing targeted study and analyzing methods, results and conclusions will be applied on future design so that actual needs of householders can be predicted during the design period and the housing quality can be improved. The object of this study is the vestibule of residential buildings. Discussionson the possibilities of application of elements of traditional residential buildingssuch as vestibule and entryway to modern residential design are separated in four parts. First, analysis of history and current status of traditional residential buildings, types and capacity were also analyzed. Second, detailed study on the development of modern congregated housing layout and its disadvantages. Third, studyon the entryway usage of modern congregated housing and summarizing of itsproblems. Fourth, proposing a method to apply elements like entryway and vestibule from traditional residential buildings to modern congregated housing designso that an effective inheritance could be achieved. |
