Timing System is developed from the demand of missile and space experiment. With the progress of the science and technology i.e. modern navigation, electron, communication, electrical power, more and more projects and scientific fields need the Timing System. This thesis mainly deals with the theory and implementation of Timing System. Some pivotal techniques are investigated in this paper due to GPS precise timing and frequency calibration, precise short-time keeping. The performance of frequency standard is also deeply analyzed. To the demand of phasor measurement and double ends initiative traveling wave fault location, based on the studying and analyzing the timing service, timing, frequency calibration theories and comparing modes carefully, it has been represented out on the software and hardware design combing the GPS and FPGA technology in detail from the engineering aspect. Comparing the same type of production, the timing system presented in this paper have the advantages of high integrated level, low power consumption, small volume, high cost performance, good security, high resolution-precision and more reliability. The Timing System could provide the 1PPS, 10PPS frequency standard and corresponding timing to user side. Many interface types are also provided to predigest the interface terminal design of user side and reduce the risk of service function being affected even invalidation, which could be directly embedded to the total system to make cascade and provide the data to user in many ways. The solution is also showed to keep the high precision output when GPS signal is disable and realize the redundancy design. The application of timing system can extend to position, velocity, and mark the timing to the incident happening at arbitrary moment using the interrupt mode, etc, which has an expansive market future.
