Firstly, this thesis illustrates the necessity and characteristic of automatic control of canal operation, sums up the research in this field. Applying automatic control methods to irrigation canals is a way to improve the management of irrigation systems. Saint-Venant equations describing the hydraulic characteristics of unsteady flow are discusses, and finds out its numerical solution. The difficulties involved by these hydraulic systems such as non-linearity, delays and uncontrolled perturbations make the choice of a suitable automatic control method a challenge. To this purpose, this paper intends to investigate the applicability of control strategies that would be able to compensate the time delay and to overcome the system non-linearity. This paper builds DMC model for one canal, introduces the constant-water-volume model to control the midpoint water level of the canal, and introduces Saint__Venant function to figure out the waterpower process. MATLAB and Simulink are applied to simulate the control system, and the stability of the system is analyzed. And the results indicated the controller can build up the robustness of the system, especially has distinct effect on time lag.In addition, based on the DMC algorithm of one-reach canal, the DMC algorithm of multi-reach canal is designed and simulated to evaluate its performance. The results indicate its feasibility.
