The historical buildings in Wuhan are generally damaged at different states, some of which are damaged seriously due to the long-term use, disasters and artificial actions etc. It is suggested that they should be remedied and preserved urgently. The remedy of these buildings is the pre-requisite work of the preservation project at present, which also poses important challenges due to the lack of corresponding remedial technology in China. Supported by the Research Funds of Wuhan Construction Department (No. 2004-31), the study of this thesis is aimed to find some simple-operated techniques for the remedy projects of the damaged historical buildings in Wuhan, so it is of the high theoretical and applicant value in the field of historical-building remedy. Firstly, this thesis reviews the general methodologies of damage detection and health diagnosis applied to the historical buildings. The detection-techniques and the health-diagnosis methods of the strength, transformation and cracks of RC and brick-wall historical buildings are also discussed in details in this thesis. The detection-techniques for the wooden component of historical buildings are introduced. Subsequently, this thesis describes the damaged-state of 4 case historical-buildings (i.e. Jingming Bank Building, Hankou Office Building of Central Affiance Bureau, Huashang Commercial Building, Dalu Lane) according to the preliminary investigation of 30 typical reserved historical buildings in Wuhan. Here, these four case studies are fully detailed, including the damage and geometric investigations, the analysis of the cause and the justification of remedial schemes for 5 different damaged-state historical buildings. Finally, this thesis is concerned with the remedial principles and methods for repairing and strengthening the historical buildings in Wuhan according to the investigation mentioned above. The structural member repairing methods, the structural member reinforcementing methods and the structural system reinforcementing methods for the RC historical buildings, the lime putty repair method, the single brick replacement method, the multiple bricks replacement method and the putty sandwich method for the brick-wall historical buildings, are described and shown as the measures to remedy the damages. This thesis also discusses the remedial technology using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) applied to the brick walls. The epoxide resin remedial methods for the wooden members are also shown in details. In the thesis, a case study is discussed in details, including the detection and remedial measures. Based on the study above, this thesis demonstrates that there are some unreasonable parts in the original remedial scheme and shows the corresponding suggestions for the scheme. The conclusion of these remedial methods can be generalized for most remedial project of historical buildings in Wuhan.
