The congestion of urban traffic has become an urgent social problem, Intelligent control technique for urban roadway traffic is an important topic in control domain and traffic engineering domain. The paper introduces the Multi-phase intelligent controller for urban traffic designed for single intersection which is scalable in hardware, and presents the developing process of hardware and software of Multi-phase intelligent controller for urban traffic.The paper mainly covers the contents as follow: 1). The development history and the basic types of urban traffic control. In this part,we analyses and expatiates the achievements in current traffic control systemresearch home and abroad. 2). The design of the Multi-phase intelligent traffic controller for the singleintersection which is scalable in hardware. We first analyses the structure andfunction of the whole intelligent traffic system; then designs the road trafficcontroller which is scalable in hardware according to the system's demand to theroad traffic controller. 3). The paper presents the arithmetic of green-wave control, half-induction control,full-induction control and self-adaptive control based phase sequencer. 4). The paper presents the management software for the Multi-phase intelligent trafficcontroller.Finally, we make a conclusion and propose the future research directions.
