Column-supported steel silo is widely used in the practical Engineering. Now the research of evenly supported steel silo is comprehensive, but research on column-supported steel silo is limited. As a kind of non-evenly braced composite rotating thin-walled shell structures, the structural behavior and failure criterion of column supported steel silo are very complicated.The research of the paper is based on the mature conclusions about the evenly supported steel silo. Depending on the modern experiment method and the advanced calculating tools, both the experiments and numerical analyses are carried out to examine the structural behavior and failure criterion. Emphasis is placed mainly on the failure mode of two types of typical supported steel silos.Firstly, a system aiming to examine the initial imperfection is built on using the laser displacement sensor. With its help the 3-D measurement of the initial imperfection of the silo is applicable precisely, quickly and without direct touch with the silo itself. This system provides a right base flat for future thin shell flection experiment.Secondly, the data got from the initial imperfection detecting system is analyzed by Fourier decomposition method. The one dimension and two dimension analyses are carried out to get a knowing about the characters about the initial imperfection of the model.Thirdly, the static pressure experiment is carried out.The whole curve of stress-strain under the pressure load of the experiment model is got, and failure model of silosehavior is directly investigated.Finally, the finite element analysis such as linear stress analysis, eigenvalue buckling analysis, geometrical and material nonlinear analysis, geometrical and material nonlinear analysis considering the imperfection is carried out by the program ANAYS. The analysis show the effect of imperfection is affected by supported model. And the imperfection of real model is critical to the finite element simulation.
