The technique of the Global positioning system (GPS) has been widely applied in various fields such as survey, transportation, infrastructure construction and land resources management, etc. The precision of GPS can completely meet the requirements of those projects. To develop the advantages of GPS technique and introduce it into the survey of the control network and layout of foundations for large bridges, it will show great importance in the survey control of large bridges as well as the development of GPS technique itself. This paper studies the application of GPS technique in the survey control of large bridges. It starts from the fundamental theory of GPS technique and the arrangement of the control network. The design, control points selection, layout and precision analysis of bridge control network are discussed in details. Taking the control survey and foundation layout of the Sutong Bridge as an example, the application of GPS technique in the control survey of the large bridges is analyzed. The conclusion is that the technique of GPS could be fully applied in the planar control network for large bridges and furthermore, the layout precision of bridge foundations could also be satisfied by application of GPS and RTK technique.
