On the basis of the theory put forward by professor Xu zhenliang(my tutor) that predicts the velocity profiles and friction loss of settling slurry flow in some flowing states in a horizontal pipe, a model will be established to predict the hydraulic gradient of settling slurry flow in a vertical pipe, which is based on analyzing the change in momentum, velocity, both of large diameter solid particles and water and their mass related to momentum exchanging over the acceleration time. The calculation formulae for friction loss in vertical pipe set up clearly explicates the mechanism that water carries large diameter solid particles and the relationship between the velocity profile and the concentration distribution as well as the hydraulic gradient of settling slurry flow in a vertical pipe. At last a number of calculated results of the hydraulic gradient, and the analyses about the comparison between the calculated results and the experimental results are offered in this paper. And it turns out that calculating results is good agree with experimental results. So the formulae can serve as helpful reference for operating and designing in this field.
