The hydrophobicity change performance of composite insulators under naturalenvironmental conditions in North China has been investigated through on-site tests andoutdoor simulation tests. The test results show that the hydrophobicity of compositeinsulators can decrease or even lose in winter. In other seasons, some insulators can exhibitgood hydrophobicity recovery capacity, while others can not. Therefore, a two-parameterevaluation method of the hydrophobicity of composite insulators was brought forward. Itrecomands to use both the hydrophobicity decrease performance in winter and thehydrophobicity recovery performance in summer for the evaluation of hydrophobicitypefromance of insulators. In adiition, a comprehensive tests of composite insulators whichexhibited bad hydrophobicity on-site have been carried out, which include hydrophobicitypefromance, ESDD, NSDD, SEM, TSC, FTIR. The experimental results show the mainreason of the hydrophobicity loss in winter could be the low temperature, and the main reasonfor the bad hydrophobicity recovery capacity in summer could be the accumulation ofcontamination or the aging of silicon rubber.
