There are mainly two kinds of slope stability methods. One is traditional limit equilibrium method;the other one is finite element method. The first one has an explicit meaning, a visual physical model and easily acquired engineering parameters and accumulates a lot of experiences. The later one judges slopes' stability status by analyzing the results of finite element, without assuming the shape of slip and predigesting reactions between slips. Both of them have their advantages. This paper applies FEM strength reduction method to analyze slope static stabilization. By comparing traditional limit equilibrium method's result, the differences are presented among these methods about value of safety factor and position of slip. There are two parts of work in the FEM stability analysis: static analysis and stability analysis. Through the static analysis, we can get a mainly view about stress- and- strain values and distribution. If it was accorded with general law, the slope was considered to be stable. Different constitutive models are used to simulate soil. By comparing their FEM results, we can get ideas about their applicability and get ready for the work of stabilization analysis. Generally, FEM method in stabilization analysis is strength reduction, which is using its run-through plastic strain as an instability evidence and DP as constitutive model. But for actual Geo-technical Engineering, the soil constitutive connection is far more complex than DP can describe. So this paper applies strength reduction technique to nan-shui model, which is fit to simulate soil. This method attains a limited equilibrium status by reducing anti-shear parameters and uses the transgression of element's minimal safety factor contour as instability evidence. This paper adopts different models to analyze slope's stress- and- strain value and element's minimal safety factor distribution. Then selecting elastic-plastic constitutive model to use strength reduction technique, changes of element's minimal safety factor distribution are showed during the strength reduction process and the law of element's minimal safety factor distribution is summed up.At last, this paper uses this method to analyze the static stabilization of Nuo Zhadu Dam. Critical slide of different methods are educed. Compared with the result of the limit equilibrium method, this paper validates the feasibility of FEM strength reduction method's application in the aspect of stress. Conclusions can be made that design of Nuozhadu rubble Dam is reasonable.
