This paper combines the project of protection and reinforcement in the North district of Mogao Caves, has analyzed the forming conditions and developing regulations of the caves' common damages in the northwest area, and further studies the project technique applied in the protection of rock cave ruins.Mogao Caves, the greatest scaled treasure house of Buddhism art, are preserved perfectly in the world. It has a glorious history of more than 1,600 years, and it is famous for its wall painting and painted sculpture in the world as well. What's more, it is included in the World Inheritance Name List by UNESCO.However the caves in the North district of Mogao Caves have never been restored and reinforced since they were excavated. Crags dangerously towering, crevasse in everywhere, the surface of the cliffs extremely weathering. Archaeological excavations indicate the caves in the North district has its unique functions and plays a vital role in Mogao Caves, which is an important part of Mogao Caves as well. Therefore it should be included in the scope of the cultural relics conservation.Conservation refers to all measures carried out to preserve the physical remains of sites and their historic settings, aiming at comprehensively and truly preserving all the elements of the entire heritage site and extending its historic information and all its values for the future.Through earlier period cultural relic archaeology investigation and engineering geology reconnaissance, all kinds of damages caused in the north district, includes cracks development, wind erosion, rain erosion, flood and so on. These damages influenced the stability of the caves and the cliffs. In order to make the north district of Mogao Caves preserve longer, it's important to take some relevant engineering technical measures against these damages. For example, using the anchoring wire to stabilize the structure of the rock;crack grouting to reinforce the cracks;using PS serosity to prevent the wind erosion.
