DC-DC converter is one type of switching regulators, which can convert a rating voltage to a required voltage. DC-DC converter exhibits higher integration level, fewer external component count, and higher power supply efficiency, etc. That is why DC-DC converter has diversified applications in modern times. When DC-DC converter is applied to portable electronic product, batteries are usually required to supply voltage to portable electronic product. Correspondingly, the implementation technique of PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) controller in DC-DC converter is studied in this thesis and a DC-DC converter based on PFM controller is designed. The PFM controller of DC-DC converter has the advantages of high precision, simple architecture, low power consumption and small IC footprint. Finally, a full DC-DC converter is implemented incorporated with over-voltage, over-current protect circuits and a few external components.In this thesis, the fundamental theories of voltage regulator, DC-DC converter and PFM mode are introduced and researched. Then the generic structure of the IC is planned in terms of its function requirement. Next the circuitry and its sub-circuits are designed and simulated based on Magnachip 0.5μm process. The layout of the circuitry is also verified. The circuitry is fabricated by standard CMOS process, while bipolar transistors are manufactured by compatible CMOS process. The simulation result shows that our design satisfied the required specifications.The simulation of the whole circuit indicates that the IC has achieved our expectation including function and parameter targets. The layout design accorded with DRC and LVS.The features of the IC are showing as follows:Input supply voltage range: 2.7V to 5V;Output Voltage: 5 V ± 4 %;Regulated output ripple voltage : less than ±40mV;Efficiency ( η): up to 90%;Shutdown supply current < 5μA;> No load supply current < 30 U A;> Frequency < 740kHz.The DC-DC converter features showed very low quiescent current and high efficiency over a large portion of its load range which making this device suitable for battery-powered applications.
