Owing to unfavourable circumstance, structure aging, vehicle weight incrasing and lack of maintaining, there exist inevitably structural defects in some existing bridges. Thus the reliability assessment and strengthening technologies for existing bridges is becoming more and more important. The reasonable assessment and strengthening scheme can save a lot of investment, and at the same time the most effective scheme can be obtained.In the thesis, two methods and their development trends for reliability assessment are introduced. Taking MaMingXi bridge as project background, studies on several methods of design calculation and construction are carried on. As a new strengthening material, the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) especially adapts to reinforce bridge because of its high intensity, light quality and fine durability. Furthermore, construction method of CFRP is also summarized. Load test after strengthening shows that the CFRP reinforcing method can enhance the bearing capacity and improve the dynamic stiffness of the structure effectively.The reliability assessment and strengthening technologies of existing bridges is very important to the highway sustaining development in our country. The research results in the thesis may give reference to the scientific management of bridges, and provide some useful information to the strengthening technique using new materials like CFRP in exsiting bridges.
